Originally, the Catrina was a representation of a woman from high society in a skeletal Day of the Dead style. Since her creation in the early 1900s, she has become a prominent symbol of Mexican culture and the ties that this culture has with death. Contemporary artists have taken this idea and expanded it to include other symbiology such as swarms of butterflies, large fantastical birds, or the likeness of Frida Kahlo.
