Before the Spanish even arrived in Michoacán, the people of the village of Santa Clara del Cobre were mining copper from the earth and hammering it into beautiful vessels. Contemporary artists use reclaimed and recycled copper; the metal is melted down, then slowly and painstakingly formed into the intended shape. Santa Clara del Cobre artisans are very well-known across Mexico for their detail-oriented work.
