Angel Ortiz Pottery with Iguana (B26)

Burnished clay is the foundation of pottery techniques; a tradition that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. It is also known as “Vasija de Olor” (Aromatic Pot) because of the qualities of taste, freshness and fragrance these pots give to water.

Among their most notable features are drawings made by masters that include a predominant abstract, floral and decorative trend, depictions of animals, geometric figures, where Mexican symbols are not overlooked, such as the eagle, the serpent, the nopal tree, and recurrent pre-Hispanic borders proudly incorporated by craftsmen in every work they make.

The preparation process is a laborious one; every piece is crafted by hand and is unique. The first step includes selecting the clay, whether black or white. Then, the piece is molded and is let to stay in the dark. Within a couple of days or so, it is placed under the sun so that it completely dries up. The next step is the “polishing” stage of the pot by using river stones and water. Then the background is painted: the engobe is attached; it is decorated, patted and outlined. Afterwards it is burnished with a metal called pyrite, because of its characteristic brilliance. Finally, it is baked at 600 ° to 700°C.
